Editor: This intriguing print, "The Actor Arashi Wakano as a wakashu (youth) in a kappa (raincoat)," by Nishikawa Yoshinobu, was created sometime between 1715 and 1735. It strikes me as quite serene; the figure’s posture is so composed. I wonder, what story do you think Yoshinobu is trying to tell? Curator: Story… or a feeling perhaps? For me, the magic lies in the gentle arc of the umbrella mirrored in the actor’s posture. The elaborate geometric designs, usually found on clothing of status, and subtle colour palette against the creaminess of the print suggests Yoshinobu aimed for something deeply harmonious. Notice how the black almost shimmers despite its flatness; it anchors the piece, preventing the detail from becoming busy. What emotions come up for you? Editor: Harmonious is a great word for it, and now I see that black isn’t just…black. It’s alive with depth! But I still see a contrast; his expression seems quite melancholic to me. Do you think that could be intentional? Curator: Absolutely intentional. The artist probably understood, or maybe even knew, Arashi Wakano, who appears very young. There's a wistful awareness in those downcast eyes, almost a premonition of fleeting youth. Remember, these ukiyo-e prints were, in a sense, the “celebrity snapshots” of their time, capturing the fleeting fame and beauty of Kabuki actors. Is that a feeling you’re drawn to? Editor: Definitely. So it’s not just a pretty picture, it's about capturing a moment of both fame and the bittersweet feeling of time passing? I had just been enjoying it as a nice picture. Curator: Exactly! It makes you wonder what happened to him! Art becomes more alive and full of possibilities when we see beyond the beautiful design, doesn’t it? Editor: Absolutely, this little moment with Wakano, now, it feels vast and alive.
