This unassuming wine glass, of unknown date and maker, is an eloquent demonstration of glassmaking as a crucible of craft, design, and industry. It is made of clear glass, likely formed using a mold to give it the basic shape, then decorated with delicate etched patterns. Notice the combination of vertical ribs and the frieze of stylized floral motifs near the rim. This would have been achieved either through the application of an abrasive, or acid etching. The combination of industrial forming and hand-applied decoration is particularly interesting. It speaks to a time when manufacturers sought to split the difference between mass production and the unique touch of the artist. The relative thinness and clarity of the glass also indicate a high level of technical skill in its manufacture. Ultimately, this simple glass challenges our assumptions about the division of labor, and the boundary between art and craft.
