This portrait of Multatuli, probably made with photography by Algemeen Hollands Fotopersbureau, shows a process of looking, and perhaps the desire to impress. The image is constructed of many tiny marks, or perhaps this is the quality of the print, or how it has aged over time. Either way, the layering effect creates a sense of depth, and the image feels soft and approachable. In the clothing, for example, the contrast in mark-making allows the eye to move around the figure, never fully resting. The artist’s hand is present, but also not, giving the image a kind of ghostly quality, and this feels deeply related to the history of early photography. This work reminds me a little of the photographic portraits of Nadar, who also played with light and shadow to create a sense of depth and character. Ultimately, this portrait is an image that invites us to linger, to reflect, and to see the world with fresh eyes.
