This untitled painting was made by Zdzislaw Beksinski, but when I look at it, I almost feel like it made itself. There's this desert landscape that looks like it's from another planet, and these giant stone blocks hovering in the air – a lot of ochre and sandy hues are used in the piece. When I look at the surface of the largest block, I can see the artist has worked to create a sense of texture with the paint, like he's building up the surface, eroding it away, and then building it up again. The blocks have such depth to them that the whole painting becomes sculptural. The cracks in the stone almost feel like they're breathing. The whole image is ambiguous and evocative, I think Beksinski and Goya would have had a lot to talk about. Ultimately, this work really speaks to the unknown.
