Samuel Mutzner made this painting of a springtime scene in oil paint, and the whole thing feels so loaded with touch and feeling. Look how the colors are dabbed on, like little jewels of blues, greens, and pinks all snuggling up against each other! Up close, you can see how he builds up the surface with layers of paint. It's not about hiding the process, but celebrating it. Like the tree itself, the painting feels alive and growing. Notice how the brushstrokes around the blossoms almost vibrate with energy, as if the air itself is full of pollen. Looking at this, I think about other painters like Bonnard, who also used color to evoke a sense of mood and atmosphere, letting the feeling of the season wash over us. It’s all about the joy of seeing and the pleasure of putting paint to canvas, right?
