Joseph DeCamp painted "Red Comunion," or "The Red Kimono," with oil on canvas. Just look at how the red of that kimono seems to glow against the muted greys of the background. It’s the kind of color that feels both bold and intimate, right? DeCamp’s brushwork is visible, but not overworked. It’s like he’s letting the paint do some of the talking. The texture on that kimono—you can almost feel the silk. And notice how the light catches the edges, softening the whole scene. There’s a birdcage hanging in the upper left, and the bars create an interesting grid that is like a counterpoint to the flowing lines of the kimono. It reminds me a bit of Whistler, but with a warmer palette. Both artists were interested in capturing mood and atmosphere over precise detail. Ultimately the picture is about capturing a moment, a mood, and a feeling. And, like all great art, it keeps you wondering.
