Georges d'Espagnat created this drawing, simply titled "Head of Horse," using pen in brown ink. The horse, a symbol laden with cultural weight, appears in the throes of powerful emotion—a visual echo resonating through centuries. We see this emotive force in the ancient depictions of horses in battle, symbols of raw power and unbridled freedom. Consider the steeds of the Apocalypse, or the noble mounts of classical heroes. This potency has been carried down through time, transforming from symbols of war to emblems of social status and untamed nature. D'Espagnat’s horse head seems to express intense emotion, a universal language transcending time. The image taps into our collective memory, engaging viewers on a subconscious level. Thus, the horse, a recurring motif, shows us the cyclical progression of symbols, resurfacing, evolving, and taking on new meanings in different historical contexts.
