This photograph, made by Thomas Roma sometime in the past, invites a slow and careful viewing. The subdued monochrome palette and the way Roma captures these figures feels deeply reverent. The texture in the photograph is amazing. The play of light on the fabric of the women’s dresses creates subtle variations in tone that are quite beautiful. Notice how the folds and creases in the fabric become more pronounced in certain areas, adding depth and dimension to the image. The sleeping woman draped over the chairs has a hand resting on a book, and this small detail gives a clue about the solemnity of the ceremony taking place in the image. I think the way Roma has created such intimate and tender portraits of his subjects is compelling. The piece reminds me of the work of Roy DeCarava, particularly his ability to capture quiet, contemplative moments in everyday life. Art, you know, it's all just one big conversation.
