Pat Lipsky made *Laughing Eye* with fluid washes that bleed into the canvas. Just imagine the studio, the smell of the paint, and Lipsky's total focus as she coaxed these colors into being. It's as if she's taken a brush loaded with pigment and flicked it across the surface. The colors mingle and dance together—red, yellow, blue, black—creating a spectrum of emotion. I can sense Lipsky's hand in the work, her energy and intention somehow embedded in the strokes. There’s something so immediate and raw about this painting. The thin paint allows the white of the canvas to breathe through. It's like a conversation between control and chance, where Lipsky sets the stage, but the materials take on a life of their own. And, you know, painters are always talking to each other, whether they realize it or not. There's a bit of Helen Frankenthaler here, a nod to Morris Louis there. It's all part of this ongoing dialogue, this beautiful mess of art history that we're all swimming in.
