Intimate diary 1977

Maria Lai made this 'Intimate Diary' out of thread and paper, but who knows when? It’s not just thread, it’s like thoughts escaped from the paper, or maybe it's more like a spider web. I bet Maria was just sitting there, thinking, drawing, and knotting, letting it all come together. You know how it is when you're in your studio, and time just disappears. I think it probably felt a bit like writing to her, a way to capture fleeting moments and feelings, and then let them go, like a kite flying away. The lines are all tangled, a scribble of feelings and memories, which I guess is what a diary is anyway, right? I bet artists like Louise Bourgeois would have loved this, she was all about making feelings into things, too. Anyway, I think that's the great thing about art, it keeps the conversation going and the ideas flowing, who knows where they'll lead.
