This print of Arashiyama in full bloom was made by Utagawa Hiroshige using woodblock printing, a method integral to the rise of mass media in Japan. Notice the distinct qualities of line and color. These effects begin with the selection of wood, usually cherry, for its fine grain. The key block, establishing the composition, is carved first. Then, multiple blocks are made for each color, using water-based inks which give the print its characteristic translucent depth. Look closely and you can see the individual lines, and the distinct blocks of color. The production process was highly collaborative, involving the artist, block carver, and printer, each contributing specialized skills. Woodblock prints democratized art, making it accessible beyond elite circles. This print not only captures a celebrated beauty spot, but also reflects the circulation of images within a burgeoning consumer culture.
