This anonymous Standing Man Still Bank, made of painted wood, has a rough, handmade feel, like something knocked together in a home workshop. The palette is simple – blues, yellows, and pinks – all grounded by the wood grain peeking through. Look at the face. It’s a pinkish orb with simple dots for eyes and a wide, inviting slot for a mouth. I love the slightly wonky quality of the features, it’s a reminder that art doesn’t need to be perfect to be powerful. The paint application is thin, almost translucent in places, allowing the texture of the wood to come through. This makes the object feel worn and loved, carrying with it the marks of time and use. This piece reminds me a little of Forrest Bess’s visionary paintings. Both artists share a similar directness and raw energy. They remind us that art is, at its heart, about connection – to materials, to ideas, and to each other. It’s a conversation that spans generations and styles, always open to new voices and perspectives.
