This landscape, made with pen in brown ink and brush in gray ink by Abraham Teerlink, invites us to consider the craft of capturing a scene. Teerlink's choice of materials—pen and ink—is itself a statement. These are the tools of sketching, of immediate impressions, not the more elaborate techniques of finished painting. Look closely, and you'll see how the fluidity of ink allows for quick, expressive lines, defining form and shadow with economical strokes. The landscape genre had become popular, and Teerlink engages with it here. However, the image also draws on another tradition, that of the artist's workshop. We see a draftsman at work, observed by figures who seem to be discussing the scene. Perhaps Teerlink is making a comment on the labor of art.
