This drawing, *Park met figuren*, was created by Bramine Hubrecht. It is currently held in the Rijksmuseum. The artist’s loose application of color pencil gives the composition an unfinished, ethereal quality. The structure of the drawing is defined by a ground plane made with horizontal lines, bisected by a receding, orthogonal street with figures inhabiting the space. The figures closest to us are rendered with the most detail, while those in the distance are more abstracted. Hubrecht's artistic project appears to be an exploration of form and structure, rather than a mimetic representation of reality. She uses the semiotic system of drawing to convey a scene, but she also challenges the traditional values and meanings of representation. By doing so, the viewer is invited to question the way they perceive and interpret the world around them. Hubrecht’s approach to form destabilizes the traditional notion of a drawing as a window onto reality. She invites us to consider how line and color engage with new ways of thinking about space and perception.
