Johann Sadeler I etched this print, Christus Appears to Paul in the Army Camp, in the late 16th century. Here, Christ appears to Paul, who is imprisoned, chained, and surrounded by Roman soldiers, his gesture commanding and reassuring. Observe the halo, a symbol of divine illumination, encircling both Christ and Paul. The halo, an ancient motif, has roots stretching back to sun deities. We see it in Hellenistic art and later adopted into Christian iconography to denote holiness. The figure of Christ bears his chest, with an open gesture, echoing depictions of emperors addressing their troops. This visual language invokes a sense of authority and divine right, speaking to the complex interplay between spiritual and earthly power. The emotional weight is palpable, Paul looks up with awe. These images leave an indelible mark on our collective consciousness, resurfacing in various guises across time.
