Christian Rohlfs made "Dahlien" with oil on canvas, though we don't know exactly when. There's something really wonderful about the way Rohlfs approaches painting here, it's all about the energy of the brushstrokes. The texture is thick and juicy, and you can almost feel the give and take of the brush as he lays down each stroke. Look at the way he builds up the petals of the dahlias with these short, staccato marks, like he's trying to capture not just the look of the flowers, but their vibrant, almost explosive energy. And the colors! That fiery red against the moody blues and greens creates such a dynamic tension. It makes me think of Emil Nolde's flower paintings, there's a similar intensity and boldness in the way he uses color. Ultimately, it's that sense of process, the feeling that you're witnessing the act of creation, that really makes it sing.
