Andre Lanskoy made "La Naissance Attendue" with oil on canvas, and I can just imagine him laying down those first blues and blacks, building up the composition bit by bit, letting the painting come into being. I love the way he’s built up the surface with these almost geometric shapes that nestle together, all those reds and pinks popping against the deep blues. It feels like he’s juggling different ideas, pushing and pulling the paint until it finds its own rhythm. You can see Lanskoy working through something. Maybe that something is the trepidation and excitement of expectation? That one confident stroke of yellow near the bottom right – it's so full of life! It’s like he’s reminding us that painting is alive, and it's never really finished, it just keeps evolving in our minds. It reminds me of de Kooning, or maybe even Joan Mitchell. There's something so generous about sharing that process with us.
