Adriaen Coenen, a fishmonger from Scheveningen, created this watercolor of a Flathead grey mullet in 1584. During the 16th century, the Dutch Republic was undergoing immense social and political change as it fought for independence from Spanish rule. Coenen’s image invites us to think about the relationship between humans and the natural world. The meticulous detail with which he renders the scales of the fish suggests a deep respect for the animal. Yet, this is coupled with the inscription on the scroll which alludes to the cultural and economic significance of fish in the Netherlands. In this context, the Flathead grey mullet becomes more than just a natural specimen; it is a symbol of sustenance, trade, and national identity. Coenen’s visual compendium offers a unique glimpse into the cultural values of the time, where scientific observation intertwines with local identities and narratives.
