Simon Gribelin II created this print, Plate Three, from A New Book of Ornaments, using engraving. A dense, symmetrical composition immediately captures our attention. The black ink on the white paper creates a striking contrast. The elaborate, swirling pattern of foliage and flowers forms an ovoid frame, which gives a sense of classical order. At the base, we see grotesque masks and ribbons. These motifs, common in ornamental designs, draw on the traditions of antiquity and the Renaissance. They were often used to showcase technical skill and artistic knowledge. The central figure of a playful cherub disrupts the rigid symmetry. This element introduces a dynamic tension between classical formalism and more whimsical, Baroque sensibilities. Look closely at the engraving technique: fine, precise lines create depth and texture, mimicking the look of carved relief. In this way, Gribelin invites us to consider how the print functions not just as a visual design, but also as a dialogue between form and function. This piece offers a study in contrasts.
