This print, 'Trumpeters leading Caesar on horseback' was made in the 1500s by Jacob of Strasbourg. The image is rendered by carving lines into a block of wood, applying ink to the raised surface, and pressing it onto paper. Note the stark contrast and linear quality, a direct result of the cutting process. It required immense skill and labor to produce. The image teems with symbolic meaning, yet also reflects the artist's understanding of materials and processes. The triumphal procession is depicted with extraordinary detail, from the trumpeters leading the way, to Caesar, absurdly mounted on a unicorn, as well as dogs, cats and foliage filling out the scene. Yet, the artist’s material constraints are ever-present, underscoring the relationship between artistic vision, technique, and the social context of its creation. The result is a testament to the enduring power of craft.
