This Ceremonial Stem Cup, made by Longshan, is a real trip into the past. The dark clay, almost black in places, is contrasted by a lighter, chalky surface, like it's been pulled from the earth after centuries. The lower section has these repetitive, horizontal marks that create a rhythmic texture. It reminds me that art-making is a process - a conversation between the artist and the material. The way the clay has been worked shows the artist's hands, their touch, and it speaks to this idea of labor and repetition. I like how the top part is smoother and almost like a bulbous flower. It’s kind of amazing how they balanced the textures and shapes to create something that feels both ancient and strangely modern. This cup reminds me a little of the work of Lucie Rie, who had a similar sensibility and love for simplicity. Anyway, it all points to the ongoing conversation that is art. There is no one right answer.
