This photograph was taken by Willem Carel van der Kop, of what are likely his twin daughters, sat in a wagon, around the turn of the 20th century. The sepia tone gives the whole image a sense of nostalgia. It’s very soft, romantic even, and the composition feels almost like a painting. There’s a great diagonal line running from the upper right, where the girls’ mother sits, down to the front left wheel of the wagon. It gives the whole picture a feeling of motion. The edges are soft and blurry, which makes it feel like we're looking at a memory rather than a sharply defined moment. There’s something wonderful and strange about seeing kids dressed like miniature adults. It reminds me of the kind of uncanny portraits by artists like John Currin or even Alice Neel, where there's this mix of sweetness and unsettling realism. Art is always about seeing the world in new ways, and this photograph definitely makes me think about how we perceive childhood and family.
