Kmetty János painted "Cubist Landscape (The City Park)" with oil on canvas and, at first glance, the palette seems pretty limited, right? Just blues, greens, and a touch of reddish earth. The paint application feels so direct. Look at the marks that build the trees, they're confident, almost like he's sculpting with the brush. Then you see that sky, and it's all these directional strokes, like rain or wind, charging the atmosphere. The ground, though, is more subdued, horizontal lines pulling us back to earth. I keep coming back to the trees. There's a heaviness to them, but also this sense of upward growth, like they're pushing against the weight of the sky. It makes me think of Cezanne, how he built form with color, and how that search for form was so much about a process of seeing. With Kmetty, I see him wrestling with those same questions. It's not just a landscape, it's a record of looking.
