This old photograph of two men and a woman was made by Atelier Kaufhaus des Westens. It's so sepia-toned it's almost like a memory itself. I wonder, what was it like to take a picture back then? It wasn't the quick snap we're used to, but a whole event. The way they are posed so stiffly, so formally—it's like they're trying to hold onto something, some idea of themselves. The woman in the middle, with her lace collar and serious gaze. What was she thinking? Did she feel squeezed between these two men? Is it a family portrait, or something else entirely? Photographs like this are like paintings—they capture a moment, but they also create a space for us to project our own stories, our own feelings. I wonder how many different stories could be told from this single image.
