This is Carel Adolph Lion Cachet’s design for a book, made with pen and brush in brown ink. The strokes in this piece feel so intuitive, don’t they? I can just imagine Cachet in the moment, his hand moving with a natural grace. The bold, dark ink sort of bleeds into the paper, creating soft edges that give the whole design a kind of dreamy, ethereal vibe. Those vertical lines, thick and confident, feel like they're reaching for something. I wonder what Cachet was thinking about when he made this. Was he trying to capture the essence of the stories inside the book? Or was he simply letting his hand lead the way, allowing the design to emerge organically? It’s fascinating how a few simple strokes can evoke so much feeling and curiosity. It reminds me a bit of Franz Kline’s work, in the sense that the raw energy that is captured transcends what is actually depicted. We, as artists, are all in conversation with one another, isn’t it great?
