This preliminary sketch for a silver box was created by Mathieu Lauweriks, sometime in 1913. I'm drawn to the way this geometric drawing creates a sense of structure and order, yet also suggests movement and flow. You see the design from two angles, as though it's turning in space. Imagine Lauweriks hunched over his desk, carefully measuring and drawing each line, the possibilities of the silver form slowly coming into view. The paper’s grid offers this sense of regulated freedom. It’s a fascinating exercise in balancing different approaches – between a rigorous methodology and an invitation to experiment. You see a tension between precision and the fluidity of the swirling lines, as though they're trying to escape the confines of the grid. For me, it’s about how we use constraints to liberate, rather than limit, our creative process.
