Here is the 1913 "Cadetten-Almanak" made by Naamloze Vennootschap Bredasche Boekh. en Uitgev.-Mij. It's a book, and when you open it, the first thing you see is a photograph of a serious young man in uniform, gazing out. I imagine the printer carefully setting the type for the title page, each letter a deliberate mark, much like a painter applying strokes to a canvas. The texture of the paper, the weight of the ink, these are the material aspects that bring the book to life, just as texture and pigment do in painting. The portrait of the cadet brings to mind those old sepia photos; the lighting is soft, and the tones muted. It's fascinating how different processes like photography and printmaking each offer ways of seeing and experiencing the world. All image-makers are always in conversation, aren't they? Each inspiring the other, adding their voice to the chorus.
