Carel Nicolaas Storm van 's-Gravesande created this piece, Pointe du Raz, using etching. Immediately, one is struck by its stark tonal range. The composition is dominated by the rugged, dark mass of the Pointe, contrasting sharply with the lighter, distant sea and sky. The formal arrangement directs our gaze along a diagonal, from the lower right corner upwards towards the horizon. This not only creates a sense of depth but also evokes a feeling of ascending towards the unknown. The etching technique employed here captures the rough texture of the rocks, enhancing the artwork’s dramatic atmosphere. This approach to texture contributes to the artwork's unsettling mood. The heavy, dark lines suggest an impenetrable barrier, challenging our perception of natural landscapes. The artist’s careful articulation of form and space makes this piece a compelling exploration of the sublime.
