This faience plate was made by 't Fortuyn, though we don't know exactly when. Faience is a type of tin-glazed earthenware, a technique that involves coating the fired clay with an opaque white glaze, then painting the decoration on top, here in cobalt blue. The gold trim added last elevates it with a touch of luxury. What I find particularly interesting is the transfer of skill evident in this plate’s decoration. The central motif, a stylized flower arrangement, and the surrounding floral sprays are rendered with a freehand assuredness that speaks to a practiced hand. But the checkered pattern is almost mechanical, and contrasts the central motif. Ultimately, this plate is so much more than just a pretty surface. It is a testament to the transmission of skills, the value of craft, and the beauty that can be found in everyday objects. It's a reminder that even the humblest materials can be transformed into something special through the hands of a skilled maker.
