Curatorial notes

Theo Nieuwenhuis created "Takje met roze knoppen" using pen, watercolor, and graphite. The subdued pinks and greens of the sprig draw the eye, while the fainter graphite sketches around it create a sense of depth. The composition isn't symmetrical; instead, it floats, giving a glimpse into the artist's process. This sketch employs a semiotic system where the unfinished parts are just as meaningful as the defined ones. Nieuwenhuis destabilizes the traditional view of a finished artwork, suggesting that the process of creation is itself a valid form of expression. The visual elements challenge fixed meanings, engaging with new ways of thinking about space and representation. It asks us to consider how we assign value to artistic labor, and how that value shapes our understanding.
