This is a letter to August Allebé, penned by Chris Huidekooper, a dance and art critic. It's a handwritten document, and you can see the artist is thinking through making as he goes, with the dark ink creating flowing lines which build up a dense, but ordered, script. The texture of the paper seems smooth, and the ink sits on the surface, slightly raised, giving the writing a tactile quality. Zoom in, and you can see the variations in pressure, the way the pen hesitates and then surges forward, creating moments of darkness and light within each stroke. Notice the way certain letters are formed, the elegant loops and curves, and how they contrast with the more angular shapes. It reminds me a little of Cy Twombly's scribbled paintings, where the act of writing becomes a kind of performance, a dance between the hand and the page. It points to the idea of artmaking as a process, an ongoing conversation. Even in a seemingly simple letter, there's a world of artistic intention and expression.
