This photograph, by Willem Jacob van den Berg, seems to be a study in colour and place. It's glued to the blue page of a photo album, and the image itself is quite painterly, like a fauvist landscape. Look how the golden hue of the grassy field contrasts with the cool blues of the sky. I can feel the heat radiating off the land. There's a looseness to the composition that draws me in, a sense of the artist allowing the scene to unfold naturally. I keep thinking about Bonnard when I see this work. Like Van den Berg, Bonnard embraced the everyday, finding beauty in the simplest of scenes. Both artists remind us that art isn't just about grand gestures, it's about noticing the small moments that make up a life, and finding the extraordinary in the ordinary.
