Vier kinderen hangend aan een houten hekwerk in Batoedjadjar
Listen to curator's interpretation
Curatorial notes
This gelatin silver print, by Klaas Kleiterp, shows us four children hanging on a wooden structure in Batoedjadjar. The limited tonal range makes you focus on the forms, like the man holding up one of the kids. It is such a fleeting moment frozen in time. Look at that structure, it’s almost like a drawing in space. I love the idea of artmaking as a process of building, both literally and figuratively. The texture of the silver gelatin is really lovely, giving the image a soft, almost dreamlike quality, despite the sharpness of the lines. I wonder if Moholy-Nagy saw this photograph? The angles and unusual perspective are similar to his style of photography. Kleiterp seems to see the potential of art as a form which embraces ambiguity, and multiple interpretations.
