This vibrant mural, Orphée, is by Marc Chagall, and made with glass tesserae – small, individually placed mosaic tiles. Mosaics are an ancient art form, and their resurgence in the 20th century is a great example of an old craft tradition being embraced by modern art. The process of creating a mosaic is highly labor-intensive. Each tile had to be carefully cut, shaped, and positioned to create the desired image. The inherent qualities of glass – its reflectivity, its color saturation, and its durability – all contribute to the unique visual impact of this work. Beyond the skill required, this painstaking process speaks to broader social and cultural values. The use of the mosaic technique, traditionally associated with the applied arts, elevated this medium, challenging traditional distinctions between fine art and craft. Chagall’s "Orphée" is more than just a picture. It is a testament to the enduring power of materials, making, and context in understanding the full meaning of an artwork.
