Editor: Here we have an ink drawing entitled "I en romersk barberstue," or "In a Roman Barber Shop," made sometime between 1870 and 1880. I find the scene to be so incredibly detailed for a simple ink drawing; the artist really captured the social dynamics. What's your perspective on this piece? Curator: The drawing allows us to consider the commodification of grooming and its specific social context. The meticulous linework suggests the time and skill invested in both the creation of the drawing and the services depicted. Notice how the artist highlights the tools of the barber's trade? Editor: Yes, the scissors, the mirror… It seems to emphasize the labour involved, like you said. Curator: Precisely! We see the economic transaction taking place – the exchange of labor for payment. Also, consider how this scene depicts a particular class. Who do you think is getting the shave? Is this everyday work or is this commissioned art? Editor: The details in the clothing seem to indicate at least middle-class patronage, if not higher. It does raise a question about the artist’s intention, and the position of craft in art. Is this art elevating labor or just depicting it? Curator: And is there even a difference between "elevating" and "depicting" when it comes to manual labour? That ambiguity forces us to reconsider our values regarding the artist’s materials, skills, and labour vis-a-vis what is represented in the artwork. Editor: I never would have thought of that on my own. This makes me reconsider what truly constitutes "art." Curator: It challenges traditional hierarchies. Looking closely at artistic processes gives us insights into broader economic and social structures.
