This is Ryûdô, or Flowing, by Matsutani, who was born in Japan in 1937. Matsutani's work emerged from the Gutai movement, which sought to break free from traditional art forms after the trauma of World War II. Ryûdô explores the tension between control and chance. Its dark, viscous forms seem to both emerge from and recede into the canvas. Look closely, and you'll notice the subtle gradations of tone and texture. The artist coaxes the vinyl adhesive into these organic shapes, letting gravity and the material's own properties dictate the final form. There’s an almost visceral quality to the work, evoking both attraction and repulsion. Matsutani has said that his work is "a dialogue with the material." In this context, Ryûdô is more than just an object; it’s a record of a process, a collaboration between artist and medium. This piece encapsulates themes of renewal and resilience, reflecting on the transformative power of art in the face of destruction.
