Self Portrait (Detail ) 2015

Saul Zanolari made this “Self Portrait” detail, and wow, what a vision! It’s a little unnerving but in the best way, like something you might see when falling from a great height. I’m thinking a lot about how to make a painting that's as much about an idea as it is about the experience of being in a body. And Zanolari reminds me that digital art is painting too. This could be another layer of skin. I am wondering, how can you make something so real using what is essentially a digital tool? The image is dominated by this red fleshy frame and against the blue sky. It’s such a simple choice but its creates such a surreal feeling in the viewer. I am seeing a lot of branches too, are they veins?
