Paulus Willemsz. van Vianen crafted this silver panel depicting The Resurrection of Christ, a scene brimming with symbolic weight. Christ emerges, carrying the banner of victory over death while Roman soldiers lie scattered, overwhelmed by the divine event. The motif of the 'resurrected hero' isn't unique to Christianity; echoes resonate through ancient mythologies. Consider the sun gods of various cultures, reborn each dawn, or the phoenix rising from ashes, symbols of cyclical renewal. Christ’s ascension, laden with its promise of spiritual rebirth, touches a primal chord within us. The fallen soldiers, conversely, are reminiscent of defeated titans, symbolizing the collapse of old orders before the new. The banner, in its depiction as a symbol of triumph, has been repurposed time and again, initially a military standard, then a symbol of national pride, it is endlessly recontextualized. The viewer is invited to explore the timeless struggle between destruction and rebirth, engaging with symbols that shape our collective psyche.

An angel has rolled away the stone from Christ’s rock-cut tomb: the Risen Christ floats on high. Three of the soldiers guarding the tomb have sunk into deep sleep, while three others look on in wonder at the miracle taking place before them. The city of Prague is visible in the background; in this way the divine becomes part of daily reality.
