Augustin Foin created these two square borders during the height of the Rococo period, an era defined by its ornate and theatrical style. Think about the ways in which frames not only contain, but also define, how we perceive what's inside them. The Rococo style was embraced by the aristocracy, becoming a visual language of power. These frames, with their delicate foliage and symmetrical designs, speak to the era’s emphasis on elegance and status. The rigidity and definition of the frames contrasts with the nothingness inside. This brings to question how the form shapes the content, influencing the viewer's perspective and even constructing meaning itself. As you contemplate these borders, consider the power dynamics at play. Who gets framed, and who decides what is worthy of being framed?
