This is Bramine Hubrecht's drawing of a young woman with a headscarf, probably made with graphite on paper. Look at the repeated marks, all in the same direction, building the tone. It’s all process here. The marks are dark and close together to give a sense of shadow, but they don't attempt to be realistic. See how the artist uses the marks to suggest the form, the fall of the fabric, and the shape of the head underneath? The texture of the paper is also really present, creating a sense of light. The marks close to the hair are the most laboured, they build into this lovely dark mass. It reminds me of Van Gogh, in the way that the drawing feels like a physical and emotional response, and celebrates the way we can record our experiences. Sometimes art is about taking your time and finding the beauty in the everyday.
