Curator: Roger Fry’s drawing, Baroque Altar, Perpignan, captures an interior view, likely sketched on one of his travels. Editor: Immediately, I’m struck by the play of light and shadow – it's almost theatrical, inviting a hushed reverence, don’t you think? Curator: Absolutely, the Baroque style lends itself to that, with its dramatic flair and ornamentation. It’s interesting how Fry, known for his post-impressionist leanings, engages with this historical style. Editor: Yes, and the cross is central. The crucifix and surrounding figures are potent symbols, reflecting faith, sacrifice, but also the enduring power of these images. Curator: It’s amazing how Fry manages to convey such grandeur with simple lines, there is an evocative nature in this work. Editor: I agree. Fry is making us consider how the church is a place of dramatic emotion. The cross is almost like a brand on our psyche. A powerful work.
