Lover's Gift of a Chrysanthemum (Episode 18) from the "Tales of Ise" (Ise monogatari) Late 16th to early 17th century
Dimensions H. 24.4 x W. 19.3 cm (9 5/8 x 7 5/8 in.)
Editor: This is "Lover's Gift of a Chrysanthemum" from the Tales of Ise, created by the Tosa School. It's a small piece, but the detail is remarkable. What strikes me is how the architecture seems to separate the figures. What do you make of it? Curator: Consider the materials: pigment, paper, perhaps silk. These were commodities, produced and circulated within a specific economic system. How does the artist's labor, and the value placed on this object, reflect the social context of its creation and consumption? Editor: So you're saying that the materials themselves tell a story about production and value? Curator: Precisely. And how the tale depicted informs the perception of those materials as well. It all speaks to cultural values and the means of artistic production. Interesting, isn't it?
