František Drtikol made "Hand" with what looks like charcoal on paper. The marks are soft and smudgy, like he worked the material into the page, more than drawing on top of it. The hand itself is huge, monumental even, casting a deep shadow that suggests something powerful lurking behind the act of creation. I love how the line is not completely defined, and the tonal range is so subtle, shifting from the light beige paper to the rich dark umber shadow. The material aspects are key to this drawing, the texture is soft, almost velvety. Look at the way the edge of the paper held by the hand is described by a faint line, and how this contrasts with the scratchy shadow that dominates the upper section of the drawing. Its so ambiguous, and yet confident. It makes me think of other artists like Man Ray, experimenting with photography and light. "Hand" suggests that art is not just about the final image, but about the process, the materials, and the ideas that emerge along the way.
