This is Alexander Calder's MULE, made in wire. What I like is that it's a line drawing in space. The wire loops and twists, conjuring the animal's essence. It makes me think about what it might have been like for Calder to make it. Imagine the satisfying bend of the wire between his fingers, the shift in balance as the form emerges. The artist making quick, intuitive decisions, bending and shaping, maybe thinking about Picasso or Miro, maybe not thinking at all, just feeling the material in his hands. There's a playful energy to it, like a doodle come to life. The curve of the neck and the angle of the head suggest movement and character. It reminds us that artists are always in conversation, drawing on each other's ideas and pushing the boundaries of what's possible. It's a beautiful reminder that art is about process, experimentation, and the joy of making.
