Editor: This is "Verschillende herten en een eland in een landschap" – "Various Deer and an Elk in a Landscape" – by Marcus Gheeraerts I, from 1583. It's an engraving. There’s something almost scientific about the way the animals are rendered. It’s like a detailed study. How do you read this print? Curator: Indeed. While appearing straightforward, prints like these served a distinct social purpose. The detailed rendering suggests an aspiration to scientific accuracy, aligning with the Northern Renaissance's burgeoning interest in the natural world. These images also functioned as status symbols, demonstrating the patron’s wealth and connection to the elite practice of hunting. Look closely, do you notice how the landscape acts almost like a backdrop rather than an immersive environment? Editor: Yes, I see what you mean. It does seem like the deer are almost posing in front of it. It’s interesting how this might have been connected to wealth…So these images were displayed almost as trophies? Curator: Precisely! These prints democratized access to imagery otherwise confined to painted or tapestried aristocratic spaces. They allowed a broader audience to engage with and emulate the symbols of power, however, that came with its own set of complex socio-political dynamics as art became a commodity. Doesn’t it also feel that with the black and white engraving, the animals almost look taxidermied even while alive? Editor: It definitely gives it an otherworldly vibe, like the creatures have already become displays! I hadn’t considered the implications of making these images more widely accessible, it’s much more complex than just documentation. Curator: Exactly. So, art and social class have always been tied to one another, which explains a lot about art in our own time too. Editor: Thanks! This was very insightful; it helps me better understand how art served socio-political functions!
