Albert Bloch painted 'The Green Dress' with oil on canvas, and while we don't have the exact date, we can still delve into its making. The colours here feel like they are there to amplify each other, not to describe anything in particular, and that feels true to life, if you ask me. The paint in this work is really something: it’s thick in places, almost like he's sculpting with it. And the texture! You can practically feel the roughness of the canvas underneath. The dress itself is this intense, almost acidic green. There’s something unsettling about it. Look at how the green drips and pools in the folds of the dress, almost as if it's alive. Bloch reminds me of other expressionist painters like Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, with that same willingness to embrace a kind of raw, emotional honesty. I appreciate that he leaves us with more questions than answers. Because isn't that what art is all about?
