"Man met kabinet en toeschouwers" (c. 1750 - 1754) by Dutch artist Noël Le Mire depicts a street scene in which a performer stands before a cabinet, entertaining a crowd with what appears to be a puppet show. The scene is filled with everyday characters of the time period, with a variety of age groups and social classes watching the performance. The work is characteristic of Le Mire's prints, which often satirized the social and political events of his day, and it is likely this scene depicts a specific performance or event. This etching is an excellent example of the genre of "genre painting," which depicts everyday life and scenes from ordinary people. The work is currently on view at the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, and measures 360 mm in height and 414 mm in width.
