Theodoor Galle made this engraving, "Verschijning van een engel" or "Apparition of an Angel," around the turn of the 17th century in Antwerp. The print depicts an angel, messenger of God, revealing to a kneeling monk that the end of his life is near, and inviting him to heavenly joys. Galle was one of a number of artists who worked for the Plantin-Moretus publishing house. This was a time when the Catholic Church was reasserting its authority in the face of Protestant challenges. Galle’s images, filled with Catholic symbolism, were used as propaganda to shore up religious sentiment. Here, the angel offers a martyr's crown and palm branch, rewards for enduring earthly exile and battling for the faith. The architecture also carries meaning. A plain stone altar contrasts with the classical columns, suggesting the triumph of Christian faith over paganism. To understand Galle's work more fully, we can consult inventories of the Plantin-Moretus workshop and contemporary theological texts. These resources can provide insight into the artist's intentions and the broader social context in which his images were created and consumed.
