About this artwork

Dieric Bouts captured this Virgin and Child on wood panel, preserving an intimate moment frozen in time. The Virgin's red cloak, a potent symbol, speaks to the Passion of Christ and her own martyrdom, while the act of breastfeeding, or Maria Lactans, emphasizes her nurturing role and the humanity of Jesus. This motif echoes through history, appearing in ancient Egyptian art with Isis nursing Horus. Even in early Christian catacombs, we find similar depictions, each time the image subtly shifting, reflecting the prevailing cultural values. Breastfeeding scenes tap into our collective memory, evoking primal feelings of comfort and security. The Virgin's tender gaze, heavy with a premonition of suffering, invites us to contemplate the complex, cyclical relationship between mother and child, divine and human. These symbols are not static; they are alive, constantly evolving and being reinterpreted across generations.
