Dimensions Diam. 8 7/8 in. (22.5 cm)

This plate was made by Job and John Jackson between 1831 and 1835. A delicate scalloped edge frames the monochromatic transfer-printed scene. The central image, a detailed urban view, is starkly contrasted with a softer floral border that creates a tension between geometric precision and organic fluidity. Note how the composition uses the circular form of the plate to contain and frame the image. The city's linear perspective draws the eye to the monument. The overall effect is a play between the industrial and the natural, highlighting a fascination with progress. By embedding a contemporary scene within a decorative border, the plate prompts us to consider how everyday objects can also convey political and cultural values. It presents a duality, inviting ongoing interpretation.
